Caring for and Storing Cosplay Costumes

A well-cared-for cosplay costume can last years of convention wear — here is how to maintain what you have built.

Post-Convention Care

After every convention wear: allow all elements to air out before storing (sweat and environment absorbed during a convention day need to off-gas before enclosing in storage); spot-clean any marks on fabric before they set; check all armour attachments for stress damage; and note any repairs needed while they are fresh in mind. A brief post-convention assessment prevents small problems from becoming major ones before the next wear.

Cleaning Cosplay

Cleaning method by material: fabric garments — follow fabric care labels; most costume fabrics are hand-wash or gentle machine wash cold; wig — brush out tangles dry, wash in cool water with wig shampoo, rinse thoroughly, allow to air dry on a wig head; foam armour — wipe clean with a damp cloth; do not submerge in water; painted surfaces — spot-clean with a damp cloth; avoid rubbing painted areas with abrasive materials; velvet — brush with a velvet brush in the direction of the pile; spot-clean with cold water; never iron directly.

Storage Solutions

Garments: hang structured garments on padded hangers to maintain shape; fold soft unstructured pieces; store wigs on wig heads or in mesh bags away from direct light. Armour: store with padding between pieces to prevent paint scratching; in a breathable container (not airtight, which traps moisture). Props and accessories: individual containers or bags labelled clearly; sharp or fragile elements wrapped and protected. Complete costume sets stored together (with a contents label) makes convention packing significantly easier.
